Sunday's Sense and Sensibility: Walk by Faith

One of my favorite scriptures is 2 Corinthians 5:7 Walk by faith, not by sight." When I first heard someone minister on this Word I was challenged to stop looking at my circumstances - sickness, family disagreements, rebellion in a child - and focus on God. It's so hard to not focus on what is right in front of you. Our lives seems to be compounded with 'stuff' that just won't let up.

When I re-read this scripture today one thing stood out. WALK by faith. WALK. Action, doing something active. You hear so many Christians say "well the Lord is in control there is nothing I can do about ________." When the Lord said WALK by faith and LIVE by faith (Hebrews 10:38) that didn't mean we lay down and give up. We were not created to be lazy in body or faith.

Ephesians 6 makes this very clear "Therefore PUT ON God's complete armor, that you may be able to RESIST and STAND your ground on the evil day of danger, and having DONE all the crisis demands, to STAND firmly in your place. STAND...LIFT UP over all the covering shield of saving FAITH, upon which you can quench all the flaming missile's of the wicked one...PRAY AT ALL TIMES..."

In the old testament He called for all to read, meditate, memorize, live by, speak, bind to, teach to our children, place the Word of God on our doorpost for all to see.

Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord [the only Lord].
And you shall love the Lord your God with all your [mind and] heart and with your entire being and with all your might.
And these words which I am commanding you this day shall be [first] in your [own] minds and hearts; [then]
You shall whet and sharpen them so as to make them penetrate, and teach and impress them diligently upon the [minds and] hearts of your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up.
And you shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets (forehead bands) between your eyes.
And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
-Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Walking by faith means staying in the Word; walking in the the commands of the Lord; speaking the promises of the Lord instead of what is going on right in front of our eyes.

When sickness tries to manifest speak the Truths of the Bible: "...for I am the Lord who heals you." Exodus15:26  "But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our guilt and iniquities; the chastisement [needful to obtain] peace and well-being for us was upon Him, and with the stripes [that wounded] Him we are healed and made whole." -Isaiah 53:5

When offense and unforgiveness try to overcome you: "He who covers and forgives an offense seeks love..." Proverbs 17:9

When doubt rises and we think God doesn't answer our prayers anymore remember: "The Lord has heard my supplication; the Lord receives my prayer." Psalm 6:9

The answer to our every need is the Word of God. No matter what struggle, challenge or adventure is staring us in the face the Bible possesses the answer we are seeking. Speak the Word and not the circumstance! Walk by faith and not by sight.
